SOFEC wins turret mooring system supply contract for Eni’s FLNG project in Mozambique

SOFEC Inc. – a MODEC Group company – has been awarded the turret mooring system supply contract for the Coral South Project by the joint venture consisting of JGC Corp. and TechnipFMC.

This is for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a major internal turret mooring system for the Coral South FLNG unit. The FLNG unit will be designed to produce 3.4 million tpy of LNG, and will be moored in 2000 m of water depth in the Area 4, located offshore Mozambique.

The turret enables the FLNG facility to continually rotate in prevailing weather without production interruptions. SOFEC will handle all of the EPC activities regarding the internal turret mooring system and its ancillary components. In addition to this, the company will help with turret integration and offshore commissioning activities in Mozambique. Project delivery includes both the turret mooring systems (mooring legs, mechanical connectors and anchor piles) and fluid transfer systems (piping, swivels, safety and controls).

The Coral South FLNG turret represents SOFEC’s fourth single point mooring system for LNG-related business and using the company’s high integrity pressure protection systems (HIPPS) technology. The company’s design allows for a decreased pressure envelope through the swivel stack by efficiently loading the HIPPS on the geostationary part of the turret. This leads to increased operational safety on the FLNG unit, and therefore improving safety for personnel. This technology also helps to clear deck space on the vessel where real estate is at a premium.

The CEO of SOFEC, Rick Hall, said: “We are honored to be awarded this contract for the Coral FLNG Turret Moorings. This project will continue to allow SOFEC to showcase our unique capabilities in moorings and fluid transfer systems. We look forward to working with the joint venture partners to make this a safe and successful project.”

Turret is the major component of a vessel or any floating production unit (FPSO, FPO) to which the risers coming from the seabed are connected. Turret name refers the rotating function of this large equipment to facilitate the rotation of the vessel according to winds, waves and dominating current while the risers remain connected to a fix part on the seabed.( http://www.2b1stconsulting.com)
