Despite a court ruling Jindal Africa has not yet closed its dry port in Tete’s Moatize district, and continues to deposit coal there, a fact which is reportedly causing pollution, seriously affecting the health of the residents, especially those in the Bairro da Liberdade.

Hermenegildo Pacate, head of the Environment Department at Tete’s Provincial Directorate of Land, Environment and Rural Development, said it was still doubtful whether Jindal Africa would comply with the Tete Provincial Judicial Court decision.

“I do know that the provincial directorate of Land, Environment and Rural Development has issued some considerations regarding measures to prevent pollution,” Pacate said.

Rádio Moçambique says it has learned that the dry port continues to function normally, despite the court decision. The station tried unsuccessfully to get a reaction from Jindal Africa, but a source linked to management said the company would need time to issue a statement on this matter.
