Doing the math on Maputo’s 2.5 million cubic meters per month of missing water

spilling of water

At a time when water scarcity is limiting supplies in Maputo, Matola and Boane district, 2.5 million cubic meters of drinking water are lost to leaks and clandestine network connections every month.

According to Maputo Water Company, this amount is sufficient to supply about 5,000 families for four months, and is costing the company more than 2.7 million meticais per month.

The wasted water, which goes missing mainly in the suburbs, could change the current distribution model, which currently imposes constraints on consumers.

To minimize losses, ADM has launched awareness-raising campaigns sensitizing people to the consequences of vandalizing the company’s distribution network.
