China Jiang International Mozambique Investment is proposing to invest US$3 million in a real estate project in Marracuene district, about 30 kilometres from Maputo city. Mozambique’s Agency for Investment and Trade (AIC) says the initiative will provide employment for 58 people from local communities.

The company intends building a complex integrating offices and apartments for sale and rent in a region identified as an urban expansion opportunity in Maputo.

Construction is one of the main focuses of Chinese investment (FDI) in Mozambique.

Three companies are listed by Maputo local authorities as having proposals for infrastructure in Boane, Marracuene and Matola. These are SC-Square Circle, China Road & Bridge Corporation and China Jiang International Mozambique Investment.

China Road & Bridge Corporation wants to invest US$4.2 million in constructing buildings for administrative services, a construction yard and machinery park and warehouses and housing for its workers in Marracuene.

The various China Road & Bridge Corporation enterprises could potentially provide employment opportunities for 1,500 people.

Although most evident in civil construction and the commercial sector, China’s investment in Mozambique is diversified, with significant intervention in industrial production and service delivery too.

In Maputo, local authorities report an interest by Chinese entrepreneurs in setting up a plastic bottle factory in the Matola industrial area, in a project valued at US$39,700 thousand .

In 2016, Maputo province alone handled an investment volume estimated at US$400 million. US$118 million of this was foreign capital, with the Chinese expressing an interest in the processing of iron and other products.

ETIMETAL has US$100,000 earmarked for the Boane district providing employment for 108 people, and intends to open an industrial recycling unit.

AIC in Maputo has also registered an investment proposal from Huyin Trading, another Chinese company, worth US$500,000, which aims to set up a cinder and paving block manufacturing unit.

Wang Hao Construction, an agent in consulting, construction and equipment operation proposes investment valued at US$3 million, representing job opportunities for 108 Mozambicans in Matola.

Mozambican authorities have in total registered proposals for the construction and operation of six plants manufacturing pipes, reinforced beams, blocks, pavers, tiles and zinc sheets in districts including the city of Matola.
