Russia is planning to supply weapons to Mozambique under a new military technical co-operation agreement between the two governments that went into force in June last year, but was only revealed this week, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported.

The agreement, which was published on the Russian official web portal of legal information on 25 January, covers the “supply of weapons, military hardware and other military products with the purpose of ensuring the signatory states’ defence and security”, as well as operation, maintenance, and sale of military products and supplies of spare parts and components for them. The agreement also allows the two countries to work together to jointly develop and manufacture military products.

The Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Co-operation and the Mozambican Ministry of Defence will be responsible for implementing the agreement. Russian specialists may be posted in Mozambique to facilitate this.

The agreement was signed on 22 December 2015 and took effect on 23 June 2016. The document was officially published on 25 January 2017.
