Mozambique’s mining regulator INAMI is inviting companies to submit proposals for the development of a phosphate deposit in Nampula Province, that could be used to feed one of the fertiliser projects recently submitted under the country’s domestic gas project tender.
Interested companies have until 6 March 2017 to submit their proposals, which will be opened at 14:00hrs in the presence of the bidders at INAMI’s offices in Maputo.
The Evate deposit in the district of Monapo was abandoned by Vale in 2014. The Brazilian mining giant had carried out analysis of the deposit for seven year before deciding against taking it further.
The company had planned to produce more than 3.5-million tons per year of phosphate concentrate over 28 years, according to information released by oil and gas sector regulator INP to the domestic gas project bidders in the second half of 2016.
Vale’s work identified resources of about 909-million tons containing 7.54% phosphorous pentoxide, raw material for the production of phosphoric acid which can be used in the production of phosphate fertilisers.
Several fertiliser manufacturers have submitted bids under the domestic gas project tender, including Norwegian fertiliser giant Yara, Pakistani state-owned Engro Fertilizers, Sinochem Jiangsu Construction Co. – whose fertilizer division, Sinofert, is the largest fertiliser supplier and distributor in China – and Japanese conglomerates Mitsui and Marubeni, which are both active in fertilizer production.
The winners of the tender, which should have been announced on 14 December, should now be announced by the end of January, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, told Zitamar News.
