News Alert! Four tons of sub-standard products removed from Maputo Shopping Centre

Just over 3,750 kg of various products have been removed from Maputo Shopping Centre as being unfit for human consumption.

Products include biscuits, flakes, rice, flour, cod, milk and dairy products such as yogurt, cheese and butter, all considered defective by the National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) by virtue of being out of date, lacking proper labels, damaged or kept under improper storing.

INAE spokeswoman Virginia Muianga said that institution teams are working through the four-floor shopping centre and should end their checks today.

She added that the products seized were incinerated yesterday, but the inspection continues and may result in the seizure of more items whose trade and consumption are deemed a danger to public health.

Apart from products unsuitable for consumption, INAE personnel found that a number of shops in the capital’s largest shopping centres are trampling the law when it comes to pricing too. Even facilities such as beauty salons should indicate the prices of their services in a clear and visible manner, Muianga says.

The teams also tackled hygiene issues and the legality of operators, demanding permits and importer cards from those bringing goods into the country, and Muianga expected stores to change their way of doing of business as a result of the sweep.

The Maputo Shopping Centre houses restaurants, bars, cafes, grocery stores, laundries, clothing stores, home appliance outlets, a bookstore, pharmacies, a cinema, gyms and car-wash among other facilities.

Asked about the legal implications of the breaches, Muianga said it was premature to make any comment, since the work was still in progress and cases would have to be properly analysed before passing judgement.

The owners of the shopping center promised to contact ‘Notícias’ following the news that biscuits on sale in Hyper Maputo, the main grocery store in the mall, were infested with weevils
