Breaking News! Japanese consortium to build Maputo 100MW gas-fired power plant

A consortium made up of Japanese industrial groups Sumitomo and IHI have won the contract to build a 100MW gas-fired power plant just outside the Mozambican capital of Maputo. Construction will be financed by a $151 million concessional loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) that was agreed two years ago.

The plant is due to come online in 2018, and is the first of a series of projects that electricity utility EDM promises will increase generation capacity in the country by 335 MW in the coming years, EDM chairman Mateus Magala said at the signing ceremony for the new power plant on 17 February.

The financing deal, under which Mozambique will pay back the interest-free ¥17 billion loan over 40 years after a 10-year grace period, was signed with JICA by Pedro Couto in January 2014, when he was deputy finance minister. Couto, now Mozambique’s energy minister, said the signing of yesterday’s construction contract gave him “great satisfaction”.

Other new projects include a 50 MW gas-fired project near Chokwe, Gaza province, known as Kivanunga. EDM said it is also prioritising generation plants for the central and north of the country – in particular, the Nacala and Beira corridors.
