Mozambique interconnection feasibility study between Malawi and Mozambique out in 2017

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mines Ben Botolo says Malawi and Mozambique have identified a contractor from Germany to design the project.

“Malawi and Mozambique has found a contractor from Germany to design the project and the feasibility study will look into social cost and environmental cost,” said Botolo.

He further said that the social cost will focus on reallocating people settled where the line will pass and environmental cost will look at environmental features that can be affected by the line.

“We have just signed a contract with the contractor and it will take six to one year to be completed,” he said.

At the moment ESCOM is able to supply electricity of about 320 megawatts against the required 360megawatts.

Once completed, the project will enable Malawi to get electricity from Mozambique which could reduce power outages.
