(2015-11-06) French oil company Total has brought its ‘Start-up of the Year’ competition, an initiative supporting young entrepreneurs across African countries, to Mozambique.
The competition, which is open to companies less than two years old, will select ten projects in Mozambique, of which the top three will be shortlisted for a prize of 1.3 million meticais (26,000 euros) and follow-up during the early stages of implementation.
“Our intention is to discover and support the innovators of tomorrow in Mozambique, young people who will help us develop the country in the future,” Total Mozambique commercial director Edouard Bourdin told Lusa at the competition launch in Maputo.
Applications must be submitted by January 2016 through the company’s website and will be analyzed by a jury composed mostly of lecturers from local universities for elements such as innovation, originality and potential for development.
“We want to discover talent from around the country, whether from urban or rural areas,” Bourdin said, adding that the most important aspect is the project implementation support that Total, in collaboration with local universities, will be able to give.
Esperança Bias, former Minister of Mineral Resources in Mozambique and patron of the competition, said in her speech that the initiative comes at a perfect time, when the country has strong growth potential in the energy sector, making Mozambican business markets more dynamic and demanding.
Bias challenged other Mozambican and multinational companies to adopt such initiatives as a way of encouraging youth entrepreneurship in Mozambique.
