(2015-09-17) The government is closing the Geological Mining Institute and transferring its functions to the National Institute of Mines, the Council of Ministers announced Tuesday in Maputo.

Mouzinho Saide, a government spokesman quoted by ‘O País’, says the decision is aimed at eliminating duplication of powers and boosting the country’s mining sector.

The Council of Ministers decree defines the duties and powers the National Institute of Mines (INAMI) will have as the regulatory body for mining in the country. INAMI will also promote and administer public and private sector participation in the research, exploration, import, processing and export of mining products and their derivatives.

“This move eliminates overloads and duplication of powers that co-exited in two separate institutions,” the government spokesman said.
