The new Head of State Filipe Nyusi is banking on support from several people from the northern part of the country, more precisely from his own birth region of Cabo Delgado Province. The Defence Minister Atanasio Salvador Ntumuke who is close to retired General Alberto Chipande, a Frelimo (ruling party) heavyweight and Nyusi’s mentor, has strong connections with the mining and energy business. Chipande owns a stake in Cabo Delgado Investimentos along with the Frelimo MP José Mateus Katupha, also from Cabo Delgado, who was Nyusi’s political advisor during the recent election campaign. Also from Cabo Delgado and a very active businessman (ION 1393), General Lagos Lidimu, a former Chief of Staff (1995-2008) is close to Nyusi and still has the ear of the president.
Separately, Pedro Conceiçao Couto, who hails from Nampula (north of the country), gained the super-ministry of natural resources and will work closely with the new president on the development of mining and gas projects of primary concern to the north of the country. Finally, Nyusi’s Chief of Staff Adelaide Anchia Amurane is also from Nampula.
