(2015-07-01) New global taxi service phenomenon Uber is on its way to Maputo. The service is already a success in South Africa and is now making its way to neighbouring countries.

The new service present fierce competition to traditional taxi services. Any citizen who wants to work as a chauffeur and has a car that satisfies Uber’s requirements can, after a short registration process, become an Uber driver.

The Uber app is easily downloaded to a smartphone and allows the user to see which Uber vehicles are in the vicinity and how soon the taxi can collect the customer, while simultaneously indicating how much the trip will cost.

Payment is made by credit card or through platforms such as m-pesa, with Uber getting 20% and the driver 80%.

The fare is always less than the formal taxi schedule and could spell the end of the licensed taxi or Txopelas service. Since it is an arrangement between private parties and takes place over the internet, it is nearly impossible for the authorities to monitor and control.
