Islamic bank finances construction of a 176-kilometre paved road connecting the north of Mozambique to Tanzania

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB)

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) will finance the construction of a 176-kilometre paved road connecting the north of Mozambique to Tanzania, according to Mozambican news agency AIM.

The road connects Mueda to Negomano in the province of Cabo Delgado and then on to Tanzania, via the Ponte da Unidade (Unity Bridge), inaugurated in 2009 by former Mozambican President Armando Guebuza and his Tanzanian counterpart, Jakaya Kikwete.

The bridge, the news agency said, has been underused due to the state of the existing road, particularly in the rainy season.

The funding request was addressed to the IDB President Ahmad Ali, by the Mozambican minister of economy and finance, Adriano Maleiane during the closing ceremony of the 40th annual meeting of the IDB member countries, a two-day event that started last Thursday in Maputo.

Maleine said the two sides still needed to agree on the amount to be granted to Mozambique for construction of the road, since studies had yet to be carried out.
