Eni talks Mozambique gas development in Rome – ‘The’ meeting


(2014-12-05) The President of Mozambique, Armando Emilio Guebuza, and Ministers Balói, Bias, Pacheco and Gundana, met today Eni’s Chief Executive Officer, Claudio Descalzi, to review progress on the development of ongoing projects in the country.

The meeting was also attended by a delegation of the Government of Mozambique, among others, formed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Oldemiro Baloi, the Agriculture Minister, José Pacheco, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Esperança Bias, and the Presidency Minister for Social Affairs, Feliciano Gundana.

During the meeting, the CEO of Eni updated the President and his delegation, with the progress of ongoing projects in Mozambique for the development of the Area 4, where so far has been discovered resources of approximately 85 Trillion cubic feet of gas in place.

Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006, when following an international tender, we were assigned the Area 4, offshore block located in the Rovuma basin, in the north of the Country.

Claudio Descalzi

Mr. Claudio Descalzi has been the Chief Executive Officer of Eni SpA since May 2014. Mr. Descalzi serves as President of Assomineraria and Vice President of Confindustria Energy. He served as the Chief Operating Officer of Exploration & Production Division at Eni SpA since July 30, 2008.

Claudio Descalzi was born in Milan in 1955. He graduated in Physics in 1979 at the Politecnico di Milano. He joined Eni in 1981 as an Oil-Gas field petroleum engineering and project manager, for the development of the North Sea, Libya, Nigeria, and Congo.
In 1990, he was appointed Head of reservoir and operating activities for Italy. In 1994, he was named Managing Director of the Eni subsidiary in Congo and in 1998 Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Eni’s subsidiary in Nigeria. From 2000 to 2001, he held the position of Executive Vice President for Africa, Middle East and China. From 2002 to 2005, he was Executive Vice President for Italy, Africa, Middle East covering also the role of Chairman of the Board of several Eni subsidiaries in the area. In 2005, he was appointed Deputy Chief Operating Officer of Eni Exploration & Production Division. He was Chief Operating Officer of Eni Exploration & Production Division since July 30, 2008.

In 2012, he was the first European to receive the prestigious Charles F. Rand Memorial Gold Medal 2012 award by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the American Institute of Mining Engineers. He is currently President of Assomineraria and Vice President of Confindustria Energia.

In May 2014, Italy’s Prime Minister, Mateo Renzi, appointed Descalzi CEO of the company.
